Medicare Advantage plans can help
Original Medicare VS. Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Original Medicare
- Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance).
- If you want drug coverage, you can join a separate Medicare drug plan (Part D).
- To help pay your out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare (like your 20% coinsurance), you can also shop for and buy supplemental coverage.
- You can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S.
Medicare Advantage (Also Known as Part C)
- Medicare Advantage is an “all in one” alternative to Original Medicare. These “bundled” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.
- Plans may have lower out-of- pocket costs than Original Medicare.
- You may need to use doctors who are in the plan’s network but some plans have HMO and PPO options
- Most plans offer extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover— like vision, hearing, dental, and more.
When to Sign Up for Medicare
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
This is the seven-month period during which you can enroll in Medicare for the first time. Often this enrollment period occurs when you turn 65 or when you leave an employer-based plan after 65. If you are enrolling for the first time due to disability, your IEP timing is based on your disability date.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
From Jan. 1 – March 31, if you currently have a Medicare Advantage plan you may switch to another Medicare Advantage plan, or disenroll from your current Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.
